Learn the meaning and significance of Maha Sankalpam, in Tamil. Tamil is a provincial literature that has evolved in the times. It has been evidenced to be even older than Sanskrit by some scholars. Like any other language, it underwent its own changes in time since the evolution of Tamil speakers. The advent of Buddhism happened to be one such change when many Buddhist scriptures were translated into Tamil language to make them accessible to people living there because Buddhism was prevalent in south India around 400 BCE onwards . These Buddhist texts are dated much earlier than any other literature available in Tamil which argues for an antiquity for this provincial literature . Even though Tamil is a literary language, it is considered to be a spoken language too because the speech of the people became more and more connected with that of their written works. As a matter of fact, it is almost impossible that the former would have been without the influence from the latter . The earliest known version of a writing system for Tamil can be traced back to a little before 220 BCE. However, there are varying opinions on how long Tamilian literature existed before this time . The earliest texts available in Tamil can be dated back to mainly two periods – pre-200 BCE and 600 CE – which makes them as old as 3,000 years. The next textual period comes down to around 1200 CE, making it another nearly 1,000 years. Since the literature available in Tamil is said to be very old, there was no need for people to have a different way of writing their languages. However, the shift from a single-syllable system to a multisyllabic one happened somewhere during the time of Bible translations in Tamil. The shift from a single-syllable system also happened around 600 CE which makes it 300 years later than any other shift that had been made in Tamilian language . There are various theories that have been put forward as to why there has been this shift from a single-syllable system to a multisyllabic one. The first of which is about the loss of phonetic diversity. Tamil had a diverse phonetic system at one point in time. However, there has been a shift from simple vowels to complex ones which made the language less distinct from its neighbouring languages . This shift happened because temple inscriptions were written in a simpler form of Tamilian language . The second theory is a very obvious one which points towards Sanskrit influence. Since this language was prevalent all over India, it became easier for people living in areas where Sanskrit was not the only literary language to make use of it if they wished to . The next phase of language development happened around the 14th century CE. This was because there was a lot of influence from the Sanskrit language . However, this time, instead of it being a transition from a single-syllable system to a multisyllabic one, there was a transition from one type of writing to another which came about as the result of the invasion by Muslim Cholas. The Cholas were a powerful dynasty in southern India and they existed from about 880 CE to 1280 CE. When their rule ended, Tamil started developing its own individuality as it went into different phases which then saw all sorts of different influences on Tamil starting with Telugu and Kannada language influence . cfa1e77820
